Year 1 Take A Trip To The Seaside

Year 1 had a wonderful time at Southend-on-Sea as part of their Geography/History topic: ‘Sun, Sea and Sand.’ They enjoyed having a paddle, making sandcastles and creating sand sculptures.

They also learnt interesting facts about the pier. Did you know…

The Pier employed a horse tramway to convey goods and visitors to and from the pier head. This was replaced by the train that runs up and down the pier today. It was actually the first pier railway in the country!

A mortuary located under the old pier remained after the construction of the new iron pier, despite complaints about the smell by passersby and traders!

The pier has dealt with 4 huge fires since the 1970’s.
